The Thistle and Ember Project

Built on resilience. Driven by possibility.

Founder Story

From Survival
to Purpose

The Thistle and Ember Project was created for a simple purpose: to empower women by creating safety and providing education, giving our most resilient women access to continued security.

I know this need personally. After a difficult separation, I found myself navigating crisis after crisis while raising my children. I had to be creative, think on my feet, and find solutions fast. All while protecting a healthy and safe home for the people who depended on me most.

What carried me through was not a system. It was women. Women became my confidants, my mentors, my protectors, my planners. It was women who taught me how to find my spark and grow it again.

As I began to count my blessings, one truth rang clear: I would not be where I am today without resilience, mentorship, and support. That realization led to one unavoidable question: what about the women who don't have access to any of that?

Why Thistle & Ember

In memory of
Angelique

The thistle is dedicated to my mother, who displayed the truest example of resilience during her fight with cancer. She chose the thistle as her symbol, and before she passed, she left us her words to explain why.

The goal of Thistle and Ember is to take resilient women, shelter them, heal them, and move them out of survival and into growth. To light an ember of hope and grow true connection within the Greater Kansas City metro.

"Along with being amazingly resilient, the thistle also contains healing properties. Though the foliage is prickly to ward off predators, their nectar nourishes bees, butterflies, and other insects. It is shelter, nourishment, and healing for its neighbors. The story it tells is reflective of the narrative I wish to tell:

Be a resilient shelter of nourishment and healing for the community around you."

Angelique — In her own words
